An opticians in Rutherglen has helped local pupils take a leading role in the Rutherglen 900 March Challenge by donating essential safety equipment to primary schools in the area.
The local opticians provided high-visibility vests and professional litter pickers to ensure hundreds of children can participate safely in the community-wide effort to clean up Rutherglen.
The donation supports the ‘900 People Giving 900 hours’ initiative, which encourages residents to dedicate time to the community throughout the month.
The Calderwood Primary School litter picking took place on March 14th, between 10-11am, and was open to all local schools and community groups, including the Boy’s Brigade, and the town’s mascot, Dougie the pigeon.
Optometrist director for Rutherglen[SB1] , Catriona Pinkerton says: ‘Supporting our local schools and the local community is a core part of what we do - we were thrilled to provide the equipment needed for this community challenge.
‘By providing local schools and groups with high-visibility vests and litter pickers, we’re not just helping keep Rutherglen clean, but ensuring the children are safe and visible. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of those 900 hours of service.’
Alan Munn, optometrist director at the Rutherglen store, who took part in the litter picking added: ‘It’s brilliant to step outside the test room and get directly involved with such a positive community project.
‘Clear vision is so important for staying safe outdoors, and by providing these high-visibility vests, we are ensuring the children are easily seen. Taking part in the litter picking alongside the pupils is a fantastic way for us to support the town.’
Jillian Ring, Deputy Head of Calderwood primary added: ‘We are incredibly grateful to the team at Specsavers Rutherglen for their generous donation. Having our primary school equipped with high-quality safety vests and litter pickers has made it possible for so many more children to get involved in the Rutherglen 900 challenge.
‘It’s a wonderful way for our pupils to take pride in their environment, and having the right equipment ensures they can do so safely.’
