A diretor optometrist at Specsavers’ Glasgow Fort, has proven they have more than a keen eye for detail after successfully completing the HYROX challenge at Glasgow SEC, raising vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Clare McGowan, director optometrist at the Glasgow Fort store took on the doubles category of the global fitness phenomenon with their friend Amanda Miller, crossing the finish line in a personal best, with a deeply personal motivation.

The event held significance for Clare McGowan, falling exactly two years to the day since her father’s diagnosis. While her father’s outcome has thankfully been very positive, the anniversary spurred Clare to turn her annual fitness goal into a fundraising mission.

‘I’ve done HYROX before, but when I realised there was a charity bid option this year, it changed everything’ says Clare. ‘Knowing I was raising money for Macmillan pushed me through the harder moments of HYROX. It turned a personal challenge into something much bigger.’

Despite a persistent hamstring injury that threatened her training, Clare managed to shave four minutes off her previous years’ time. Clare credits the result to the ‘electric’ Glasgow atmosphere and the backing of the local community.

‘The support from family, friends, and my colleagues at Specsavers Glasgow Fort was incredible. Their generosity with donations definitely spurred us on when our legs started to feel heavy. To anyone thinking about trying it, go for it. The buzz is unlike anything else’.

The finish line isn’t the end of the road, following the success of the HYROX event, Clare has already set her sights on the Hybrid Games doubles in October, continuing her journey of peak physical fitness and community representation.
