An optician in Trongate is proud to announce its partnership with AWARE Scotland, a local charity dedicated to supporting disabled and disadvantaged young people across the city of Glasgow.
To kick off the collaboration, the store donated £750 to fully fund the charity’s January Monthly Hang, providing a social outlet for almost 60 participants.
The January Hangout, held recently at Toryglen Football Centre, saw young people and volunteers take part in a high-energy afternoon led by local personal trainer Andrew Atkinson from Shiftstrong.
The group engaged in sports games, including dodgeball and races, before enjoying a community dinner at Buck’s Bar.
Sean Connolly, optometrist director, says: ‘We are always looking for ways to give back to the local community that supports us’.
‘AWARE Scotland does incredible work providing respite and joy to young people, and their families, who need it most. Supporting their monthly hangouts is our way of putting a spotlight on this fantastic charity.’
The Trongate store was recently approached by AWARE to sponsor their hangout, and by supporting the monthly get-togethers and essential weekend respite trips, the store was able to unlock vital social connections and life-changing experiences for local young people.
AWARE Scotland provides monthly ‘get-togethers' and weekend respite trips away, ensuring that families never have to pay a fee for their children to participate. The charity is supported by high-profile ambassadors, including STV’s Emma Cameron, who helps champion its mission to reduce isolation among Glasgow's youth.
Chris Glancey, CEO of AWARE Scotland, says: ‘We were very kindly supported by Specsavers Trongate, who covered the full costs of our January Monthly Hang. Everyone we support is either disabled or disadvantaged. We pride ourselves on not charging families anything to take part in our activities. Support from local businesses like Specsavers is what allows us to keep these vital sessions running.’
The partnership highlights a shared goal of improving the wellbeing of Glasgow’s young people, combining physical activity and social inclusion with the importance of clinical eye care.
The Trongate store is committed to community engagement and supporting local initiatives that improve the lives of Glasgow residents.
