Customers visiting their locally owned and run High Street opticians in New Malden were inspired to donate to the store team’s charity fundraiser in aid of Diabetes UK when a mufti day was organised in support of the charity.
The event was held on World Diabetes Day (14 November), with the aim of raising funds and awareness, especially about the condition’s effects on people’s vision.
Specsavers New Malden’s retail director Karina Peshawaria Kamal says: ‘We wanted to raise awareness of the condition, particularly because it can impact on sight, in some cases leading to patchy or blurred vision or in more extreme cases, permanent blindness.
‘In store we can offer customers various diagnostic tests to identify if they have any underlying conditions, which is why having regular sight tests is so important. We’re thrilled with the support we’ve received from our customers, the team and the public in helping us to raise awareness of diabetes. So far, we have raised over £400 via our JustGiving page and in-store donations, all of which will be given to Diabetes UK.’
The 2025 theme for World Diabetes Day is ‘Diabetes and the workplace’, with a focus on access to treatment and care for the wellbeing of those people living with the condition, particularly when at work.
During 2024, Diabetes UK invested over £5.4 million in new diabetes research. With a vision where diabetes can do no harm, donations are invested into further scientific research to help transform the lives of people who have the condition.
An accredited Platinum Employer, 2024 Winners of the Specsavers Dame Mary Perkins Award for Outstanding Customer & Clinical Care, and finalist in the 2025 Awards for Excellence in Clinical Leadership, Specsavers New Malden has built up a reputation over the last 25 years for delivering outstanding customer service and clinical expertise.
In-store, customers have access to a visual field’s analyser and OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) examination. The OCT is advanced diagnostic, eye-scanning equipment and helps detect serious eye conditions, including glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, up to four years earlier than traditional methods, and is currently on offer at the reduced price of just £5.
The store offers three consulting rooms, diagnostic testing areas and a dedicated contact lens station. Hearing clinics are once a week on a Tuesday - ear wax removal is offered to customers.
For those that can’t leave their homes unaccompanied due to disability or illness, Specsavers also offers a Home Visits service covering more than 90% of the UK – with more details available at www.specsavers.co.uk/home-eye-tests
