The team at a Caithness opticians have their sights set on keeping children safe around the city’s busy road network this winter by offering free hi-vis vests to young people.
Specsavers Wick has set up a ‘hi-vis vest hub’ at the locally owned and run store on Bridge Street for families and community groups to collect at their leisure, in a bid to keep kids safe and seen when they are out and about during the darker nights.
The store has 50 small and 50 medium vests which are being distributed on a first come, first serve basis ahead of Road Safety Week in Scotland, which runs from 17-23 November 2025.
Dorris Essiet, optometrist at Specsavers Wick, says: ‘‘As a parent myself, I know how important it is to make sure kids stay visible during the darker months.
‘It’s so important that everyone feels safe and can be easily seen when walking near roads, no matter the time of year.
‘That’s why we’re inviting young people, their families and local groups to pop into our in-store hub and pick up a free hi-vis vest ahead of the winter evenings.’
‘What’s more, it’s important to keep up to date with your eye tests during the winter months, especially as you’re likely to be driving in low-light or poor weather conditions.
‘For that reason, we’re reminding drivers in the town to be conscious of their eyesight and visit the team if they have not had an eye examination in the past two years or have noticed any symptoms or changes to their vision.’
Hi-vis vests are available to collect from the store during opening hours from 8:30am – 5:30pm every Friday – Wednesday and 9:30 – 5:30pm every Thursday.
