This week (November 2 – 6) marks ‘National Spa Week’, with an additional ‘National Spa Day’ for Scotland that took place on November 4), organised by HIT Scotland.

To celebrate, Melissa Gibson, Head of Spa and Leisure at The Spa at Blythswood Square, located within the only AA accredited, five-star hotel Glasgow, Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel and Spa, shared her thoughts on the industry, key trends, as well the benefits of an indulgent spa day – physically and mentally.

1. What do you see as the key trends and challenges currently shaping the spa industry?

The spa industry is evolving rapidly, with wellness becoming a lifestyle rather than an occasional indulgence. Guests are now seeking holistic experiences that nurture both their mind and body, incorporating elements such as mindfulness, sleep therapy, and sound healing. Sustainability is also a major focus, from eco-conscious product lines to energy-efficient facilities.

2. Does indulging in a spa day offer mental and physical benefits?

Absolutely. A spa day offers far more than just relaxation it provides measurable mental and physical benefits. Physically, treatments can ease muscle tension, improve circulation, and boost the immune system. Mentally, they encourage mindfulness, reduce stress hormones, and promote better sleep. In today’s fast-paced world, taking time to pause and care for oneself is essential to long-term wellbeing.

In 2023, The Spa at Blythswood Square underwent a major, seven-figure refurbishment inspired by the Hebridean islands, which included the introduction of Scotland’s first snow shower, a Himalayan salt room, seaweed bathing, and sound treatments.

The upgrade was the biggest investment in a spa refurbishment made by IHG Hotels & Resorts in the UK.

3. Can you share some insights into how the refurbishment of the Spa at Blythswood Square in 2023 has enhanced guest satisfaction and overall operations?

The 2023 refurbishment was transformative. We reimagined the space to create a more tranquil, contemporary environment with improved flow and functionality. The new

design focuses on natural materials, warm lighting, and an enhanced thermal experience, creating an atmosphere of understated luxury. Operationally, we introduced new treatments and upgraded our post treatment relaxation room, which have elevated the guest experience and enabled our therapists to deliver a fully tranquil experience. Feedback since reopening has been overwhelmingly positive, guests particularly appreciate the sense of serenity and the elevated comfort throughout the spa.

4. As leisure travel continues to rise, what unique offerings does the Spa at Blythswood Square provide to attract and retain guests in this competitive market?

The Spa at Blythswood Square offers a truly distinctive experience. We blend the vibrancy of Glasgow’s city centre with a deep sense of calm and restoration. Our carefully curated thermal journeys provide guests with immersive, multi-sensory experiences unique to our property. Additionally, our thermal suite, featuring a vitality pool, saunas, steam room and many more relaxation areas, allows guests to completely unwind. For those looking to mark a special occasion with friends or family, the thermal suite is available for exclusive, private use.

The combination of locally inspired treatments, luxurious surroundings, and exceptional Scottish hospitality sets us apart.

5. What are your personal favourite treatments?

It’s hard to choose, but I’m particularly fond of our Indulgent Massage, which is designed to be completely tailored to the guests needs, and our Hebridean Seaweed Body Wrap, which uses sustainably sourced seaweed to detoxify and nourish the skin. Both are deeply grounding and leave you feeling truly revitalised.

This Summer, the Spa at Blythswood Square introduced ‘Spa Journeys’ - Relax, Detox, Invigorate, and Recover. Guests can choose from one of these four curated journeys, which use contrasting thermal therapies in a set order to soothe the mind, body, and soul, depending on your goal.

6. Have you had a chance to experience the new spa journeys for yourself? If not, have you had any feedback from guests/colleagues?

Yes, I’ve experienced several of our new spa journeys, and they’re genuinely transformative. Each journey has been carefully designed to evoke a different mood whether that’s grounding, energising, or restoring balance. Our guests have been incredibly enthusiastic, often describing the experiences as “blissful”. It’s been rewarding to see how well they resonate with both regular visitors and newcomers alike.

7. Finally, why would you recommend guests visit the Spa at Blythswood Square?

Because it’s more than a spa, it’s an experience. Whether you’re visiting for a single treatment or an entire day of indulgence, you’ll find an atmosphere of calm, expert therapists, and a focus on personalised wellbeing. For me, my perfect day in the spa includes a luxe treatment, access to the thermal suite for a relaxing couple of hours and then enjoying a delicious afternoon tea within the spa lobby – there’s something very fun about enjoying a scone and champagne in your robe and slippers! The Spa at Blythswood Square is a place to reconnect not only with yourself and with the essence of Scottish tranquillity. It’s the perfect retreat in the heart of Glasgow.
