The female-led clinicians and management team at Specsavers Glasgow Trongate Hearing Hub is celebrating International Women's Day (8th March) by highlighting their personal journeys in audiology to inspire more women to enter the field of science and healthcare.

The Glasgow Trongate Hearing Hub team, which recently celebrated winning a Clinical Excellence Award, is powered by a culture of mutual empowerment. Manager Elaine Sweeney,[KD1]  who leads the clinicians and supports teams across the hub’s 12 locations, says: ‘I am surrounded by intelligent, vibrant, and strong women. We all lift each other up to achieve our common goal of supporting our customers on their hearing journey.’

This sentiment is echoed by clinical lead audiologist Kayleigh Lynch, 38, who has been with Specsavers for 12 years. ‘Working in a mainly female team is very empowering. We raise each other up in all situations, work or personal,’ Kayleigh says.

For many of the team’s experts, the drive to pursue a scientific career was deeply personal. Kayleigh was inspired by her father’s long-term hearing impairment and therefore wanting to ‘give people their lives back.’ Audiologist Amitha Paul, 29, followed in the footsteps of her uncle and cousins who are audiologists and speech pathologists.

Elaine brings a unique perspective to her leadership role, having navigated her own hereditary hearing loss and ear surgery 20 years ago, whilst Nicole Nimmo, 24, joined the admin team and, within just one year, has completed an Audiology Clinical Support course, an achievement she says was made possible by the support of the ‘strong, supportive women’ around her.

The team highlights that while the work is rooted in clinical science, the rewards are profoundly emotional. Amitha, who has been at the Trongate Hearing Hub store for three years, finds pride in the ‘everyday moments,’ from successful wax removals to seeing the happiness of a client fitted with new hearing devices. Nicole specifically highlights audiologist Marie-Jo McCrossan as a role model, citing her intelligence and kind manner with customers as the gold standard for the profession.

As the world celebrates International Women’s Day this March, the Trongate Hearing Hub team has a clear message for women considering a career in audiology. Amitha adds: "The satisfaction you receive from helping people, even in small ways, is truly meaningful.’

Kayleigh Lynch continues: ‘If you're looking to get into a job where you help change people's lives, I would highly recommend audiology. Seeing our customers' confidence rise and the smile on their face...life-changing!’
